Happy Birthday Beth Gibbons

Secret Santa bought Chris the Portishead Roseland NYC Live dvd which we watched a couple of weeks ago. It was fabulous and a real blast from the past. I worked out how old I was when I first heard Portishead and then wanted to weep...
ANYWAY, the band preform with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and is so damn cool it hurts. Gibbons drinks beer and smokes fags (back when such things were allowed indoors) while crooning her lyrics in her trade mark 'little girl with a big voice' style. The audience sit and sway, Portishead are not a band you dance too as such.
They are a band you listen too otherwise the languid and slow trip hop style can distract you from the bite of the lyrics. Then you listen to them meaningfully in groups or with at least a potential partner. You should do this wearing black, drinking wine and smoking.... well so I was told by a particularly posey and self styled troubled soul at college. He had a point. But he was still a tosser. I just like Portishead because they were different to all the Britpop I was also listening too in 1995 and still sound as fresh today.

There's a really good French (sorry) film which uses GB as the soundtrack to the final scene, it's heartbreaking. It's called When the Cat's Away, but I can't find the stupid scene on youtube! that's where I heard this song first, when they made us study it for first-year french in uni. Franco x
With this as a soundtrack I don't imagine it to be an uplifting finale ;-)
